He didnt have to wake up
He'd been up all nite
Lay'n there in bed listen'n
To his new born baby cry
He makes a pot of coffee
He splashes water on his face
His wife gives him a kiss and says
It gonna be OK
It wont be like this for long
One day soon we'll look back laugh'n
At the week we brought her home
This phase is gonna fly by
So baby just hold on
It wont be like this for long
Four years later bout four thirty
She's crawling in there bed
And when he drops her off at preschool
She's clinging to his leg
The teacher peels her off of him
He says what can I do
She says now dont you worry
This will only last a week or two
It wont be like this for long
One day soon we'll drop her off
And she wont even know your gone
This phase is gonna fly by
If you can just hold on
It wont be like this for long
One day soon she'll be a teenager
And at times you'll think she hates him
Then he'll walk her down the isle
And he'll raise her vale
But right now she up and cry'n
And the truth is that he dont mind
As he kisses her good night
And she says her prayers
He lays down there beside her
Till her eyes are finally closed
And just watch'n her it breaks his heart
Cause he already knows
It wont be like this for long
One day soon that little girl is gonna be
All grown up and gone
Yeah this phase is gonna fly by
He's try'n to hold on
It wont be like this for long
It wont be like this for long

No such thing
freshman year, mom asked,
"what do you want to do
when you get out of here?"
i said, "well gee, im only 13,
but i think id like to play my guitar
and be a star"
well she said, "that's not it, youve got a time to go,
good sense will kick in anytime you know,
im not worried. im not worried."
sophmore year, she asked the same old thing
my answer had remained unchanged
i saw her figit with her thumbs
she said, "you like computers, john, you like computers dont you?
i always see you with a computer, you like comptures.
maybe you can do something with computers. yeah wouldnt that be nice."
junoir year, its a little more intense,
she says, "what do you wanna do with your life?"
"im not on the fence, i know exactly what i am to be.
and im only seventeen."
she said, "well all i ask is that you pay attention in class,
so if you happen to have a change of mind in time
you can still go somewhere reputable and do us proud."
so i went downstairs and i played guitar loud.
senior year,
same old question,
she said, "what do you wanna do?"
i said, "play my guitar and sing."
she said, "theres no such thing"
she said, "theres no such thing"
"welcome to the real world", she said to me
condescendingly
take a seat, take your life
plot it out in black and white
well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings
and the drama queens
id like to think the best of me
is still hiding, up my sleeve
they love to tell you
stay inside the lines
but something's better
on the other side
i wanna run through the halls of my high school
i wanna scream at the
top of my lungs
i just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just to lie you've got to rise above
so the good boys and girls take the so called right track
faded white hats, grabbing credits, maybe transfers
they listen to Phish, but they cant find the answers
and all of our parents, theyre getting older
i wonder if theyve wished for anything better
while in their memories, tiny tragedies
they love to tell you
stay inside the lines
but something's better
on the other side
i wanna run through the halls of my high school
i wanna scream at the
top of my lungs
i just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you got to rise above
i am invincible
you are invincible
we are invincible
as long as we're alive
we're alive
do I have to tell the story
of a thousand rainy days since we first met
it's a big enough umbrella
but it's always me that ends up getting wet
i wanna scream at the
top of my lungs
i just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you got to rise above
i just can't wait til my 10 year reunion
i'm gonna bust down the double doors
and when I stand on these tables before you
you will know what all this time was for
